LO student lands in middle of Turkish riots

Pamplin Media, June 20, 2013, By Ian Kronquist
[Former Village Home learner] Ian Kronquist, Lake Oswego, is serving in southern Turkey with an American Field Service student exchange program. What began late in May as a protest by environmentalists upset at government plans to build on a public park adjoining Taksim in Instanbul has generated into a national movement against Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, whom opponents say is overbearing and meddles in their personal lives. Violence at Taksim, where Kronquist traveled to, was pronounced over the weekend, with police firing teargas and water cannons to clear thousands of people from the square. He safely returned to his host town in Turkey before contacting his friends and family.
