Teens on the Town – Seven Weeks of Summer FUN 2019

Ages 13 – 18 (not flexible – must be 13 by January 1, 2019)

Most meetings are Thursdays,  1:00 – 3:30 pm (June 20 – Aug. 8 – No meeting July 4)

Facilitators: Whitney Johnson and Travis Grail

Keep in touch with your friends as you learn about places in Portland together. Meet other VH teens, and explore aspects of the city together. We will spend time having adventures, learning about Portland, and even serving our community with a service project. Please note: Village Home is NOT responsible for transportation to and from the events. Some events begin and end at a Trimet stop but your learner will be navigating public transport independently.  Know that late arrivals cannot be accommodated because we are often on the move. Bring a snack/water bottle.  \

COST: (Includes cost of daily events, outings, and facilitators. Over 20 hours of instruction, plus all admissions makes this an incredible dealio, even if you have to miss a week!) Session cost: $120.00

WEEK 1: Breaking the Ice!

Theme: Teambuilding!

Thurs, June 20

1:00-3:30 p.m.

This week’s theme is Breaking the Ice! Start your Teens on the Town experience getting to know each other through games, team building challenges and exercises meant to get us up and moving, laughing, and learning about who we are together as a group. Led by Village Home instructor Whitney Johnson.
WEEK 2a: Navigating Trimet

SPECIAL EVENT & TIME

Thurs, June 27

Session A

10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

BONUS SESSION Session A at 10:30 Spend the morning learning how to effectively use the Trimet app travel planning system and travel independently on Trimet with an orientation and guided first trip to Pioneer Square where we will meet up with the other Teens on the Town learners.
WEEK 2b: Oregon Historical Society

Theme: History!

Thurs, June 27

Session B

1:00-3:30 p.m.

Session B begins at 1:00 at Pioneer Square where all Teens on the Town learners will meet. Then we’ll walk together to the Oregon Historical Society to experience ‘Ladies & Gentlemen: The Beatles!” – an exhibit that explores the vast and lasting cultural influence of this popular band from the 60’s. Meet at Pioneer Square by the umbrella man statue and walk to the Oregon HIstorical Society.
Week 3: Explore Downtown

Theme:  Adventure!

Thurs, July 11 (no July 4)

Come find us at Pioneer Square at 1:00 to embark on a journey throughout our city’s beautiful downtown. Together we will explore some of our favorite Portland landmarks, and learn a little about our fair city’s rich history along the way. After exploring we will make a stop at Ben and Jerry’s- so bring money for Ice Cream!
WEEK 4:  Escape Room

Theme: Challenge!

Thurs, July 18

1:00 – 3:00 (*note earlier ending time)

Come test your brain and teamwork with us at Portland Escape Rooms! We will split into two groups and do our best to break out of a room by solving puzzles and gathering clues, while racing against an hour-long clock! Drop off and pick-up will be at Portland Escape Rooms (10700 SW Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy #118, Beaverton, OR 97005) We will meet there at 1:00 and pick up is at 3:00.
WEEK 5: Oregon Food Bank

Theme: Service!

Thurs, July 26 (No meeting on July 4th)

9:30 – 11:30 a.m. (*note the NEW time)

Come help serve our community by packaging food (and any other help needed) with the Oregon Food Bank. With a focus on freshness, self reliance and change, the Oregon Food Bank distributes food to over 1,200 food assistance sites in Oregon and Washington. They are a critical part of feeding families and rely on the volunteer efforts of the community to package and distribute food. Please wear closed toed shoes and prepare to be in a cold space as they sometimes need assistance with frozen goods.

WEEK 6: Wilson Pool

Theme: Swim!

Thurs, Aug. 1

12:30 – 3:30 p.m. (*note earlier start time)

Dive in! Swim and play together in the summer sun at one of Portland’s coolest outdoor pools – make that two pools, a lazy river, and a giant waterslide! Bring a snack, a towel and sunblock and get ready for a day of fun! Drop off 12:30 at Wilson Pool, 1151 SW Vermont St., Portland
WEEK 7: Washington Park

Theme: Hidden Objects!

Thurs, Aug. 8, 1:00-3:30 p.m.

Come explore Washington Park with us, and spend the day searching for “hidden objects.” Be sure to bring water, a good pair of shoes, and a good amount of curiosity! Meet us at 1:00 at the above ground part of the Washington Park Max station.
