The Village Home CHOICE (Creating Home-based Options for Independent & Collaborative Education) program is a K-12 private school option for Village Home members. In this program, families work with a Learning Consultant to define a learning plan for each student, identify helpful resources for achieving the learning plan, and monitor progress under the learning plan with regular team meetings. In addition, Village Home CHOICE families will meet as a group on a monthly basis for discussions and group projects. Click Here for a printable document.
The Village Home CHOICE program allows families to:
- Work with a mentor. The mentor can provide suggested approaches and resources based on the mentor's experience and the Village Home CHOICE resource library. The mentor can also serve as a neutral third party for the student to interact with, which often enhances the dynamic between the learner and the primary educator, the parent. Additionally, the mentor provides a third-party viewpoint for observing and assessing the student's educational progress, and assistance in developing a portfolio or transcript in the upper grades.
- Work with other students on collaborative, student-initiated projects with maximum time flexibility (not limited to 10-week sessions).
- Be enrolled in a private school, rather than registering as a homeschooler, giving the family full flexibility in determining the means and frequency of assessment of educational progress.
Families apply for admission to the Village Home CHOICE program, and schedule an admission interview. There is a nonrefundable $25 application fee. At the interview, the lead Learning Consultant assesses whether the student's and family's needs can be appropriately met through the CHOICE program, and helps the family identify at least one Village Home class that the learner plans to take. If accepted for admission, the family will:
- Choose a Learning Consultant from a panel of available Learning Consultants.
- Choose the level of participation desired. The Standard Level includes monthly core team meetings (parent, student, Learning Consultant). The Premium Level includes weekly core team meetings during the Village Home term.
- Choose a payment plan (annual or in 3 installments).
- Enroll as a Village Home member and sign up for at least one Village Home class each term.
The Learning Consultant will meet with each learner/parent team at the beginning of the year to develop and document a
learning plan for the year. The learning plan will be the basis for periodic meetings with the Learning Consultant (monthly or weekly, depending on the
program option that the family chooses).
The precise role of the Learning Consultant will vary depending on the needs and preferences of each core team.
At a minimum, the Learning Consultant will:
- check in with the learner and primary educator to monitor progress under the learning plan,
- encourage the primary educator and learner to document their observations on learning,
- maintain official school records for each learner (registration forms, immunization records, attendance records and meeting records), and
- write an end-of-year summary report for each learner.
If requested by the primary educator or the learner, the Learning Consultant may also recommend resources, provide information on learning approaches and styles, help plan learning projects, help build a portfolio or transcript, and help assess the learner's progress.
In addition, Learning Consultants work with the families as a group during monthly meetings, to provide information about learning and to facilitate collaborative learning projects.
One-time application fee: $25 per learner, nonrefundable
